Some sixty workshops of potters producing amphorae in Gallia Narbonensis are known; those surveyed or excavated constitute an exceptional corpus. This book offers a survey of their archaeological context: presenting the various stamps known; and discussing the geological context, as well as the clays. In this multidisciplinary study, we have aimed at defining the geochemical characteristics distinguishing the different production centres, seeking links to the geology of the clays. We tried to identify and to localize unknown workshops –of which traces were preserved by the presence of stamped amphorae series originally from Gallia Narbonensis (as revealed by typological and technological features)– in markets, or along the trade routes.
Based on this data, we have attempted to see whether it was possible to assign a zone of production –and thus a vineyard– to unstamped amphorae of Gallia Narbonensis exported to the large markets of the Empire. In fact, identical types were manufactured in the entire Province –notably the Gauloise 4 (G. 4) amphorae typical of large-scale trade, of which the form was standardized and the calcareous paste of identical appearance in all of Gallia Narbonensis. If inscriptions painted on the body and neck designated the quality of the wine and its origin, with very rare exceptions, they have disappeared. So, it is only the comparison of the chemical compounds of exported amphorae with those of the workshops or zones of extraction that permit the identification of a geographic origin today. We have made experiments analysing Gauloise 4 amphorae exported to the northern limits of the Empire and to Ostia, the harbour of ancient Rome.
